One Question, Five Perspectives: The Interdisciplinary Collaboration at the Heart of Babywearing

In one of our recent Foundations in Babywearing Education sessions, a moment unfolded that reminded me exactly why we created HELD—though no one said the word at the time.

We were nearing the end of a hands-on segment on stretchy wraps, and someone asked what seemed like a simple, practical question:

“How do you know if the stretchy wrap is too tight?”

It’s the kind of question we’ve all heard before. But what happened next wasn’t so ordinary.

One question turned into a dozen more.
The discussion leapt from wrap types to caregiver feedback, to the baby’s experience, to what over-tightening even looks like. We talked about how a client might describe discomfort without having the language for it. We talked about breath—something I hadn’t realized I was subconsciously watching for until that very moment.

And we talked about it all because the room wasn’t filled with just babywearing educators.


There was a pediatrician.
A medical student.
A pediatric physical therapist.
A doula.
A babywearing enthusiast.
Each voice added a new lens, a new framework, a new why.



The Power of an Interdisciplinary Room

This is why I encourage people from so many different backgrounds to take part in babywearing education—not just because they bring valuable expertise to the work, but because they change the conversation itself.

When we wrote about “an OT, a nurse, and a lactation consultant walking into a babywearing workshop,” we weren’t trying to be cute. We were naming something essential: real progress happens when people from different disciplines talk to each other.

It’s in those conversations that gaps get filled.
Blind spots get noticed.
And new, more holistic ways of supporting parents begin to emerge.

That stretchy wrap conversation became a teaching point in every other session that week. What started as one participant’s curiosity sparked a ripple of insight I now use across all my teaching.


This Is Why HELD Exists

We didn’t create HELD because we needed another professional development workshop. We created it because these interdisciplinary moments shouldn’t be rare.

Parents aren’t navigating babywearing in neat little compartments. They’re balancing latch issues, motor development, postpartum recovery, sensory overload, and sometimes all of it at once.

They deserve care teams who can communicate across disciplines. And we, as professionals, deserve spaces to practice that kind of collaborative learning—with real bodies, real stories, and real hands-on tools.

HELD brings together babywearing educators, PTs, OTs, lactation consultants, doulas, and other perinatal pros for one powerful day of learning by doing. No slides. No silos. Just deep, embodied, collaborative exploration.
