A Simpler Way to Stay Focused When Your Work Time Is Limited

Most babywearing educators know the feeling of sitting down with a clear goal… and then watching that goal dissolve into an unexpected maze of open tabs, unrelated topics, and time you can’t get back.

It often starts innocently:
a quick search for a carrier photo, a video to double-check a technique, a reference for a workshop.
But five minutes can turn into a scroll spiral before you even realize what happened.

There’s a straightforward method for staying anchored when your brain is busy and your time is short: the Decide & Do filter.

STEP 1 |  Decide (Before You Click Anything)

Before you start any task, take 1–2 minutes to define: What exactly needs to be finished?
Not researched, not explored, not perfected: finished.

Write a clear, single-sentence goal such as:
“Create a printable carrier comparison chart for Saturday’s workshop.”

Then give yourself one “lane” for gathering information: one blog, one video, one resource, one old document, etc.
Set a short timer (about 10 minutes) to keep the search contained.

This sets the boundaries before the internet has a chance to pull you off course.

STEP 2 | Do (Turn Info Into Something Tangible)

Once the timer ends, stop researching and immediately shift into action:

  • open the Canva template
  • add what you found
  • draft the copy
  • upload the images
  • export the PDF

This is where the work actually moves forward.
The goal here is done, not perfect.

The magic is in the transition: research creation, without drifting back into more research.

WHEN IT HAPPENS | When You Catch Yourself Falling Down the Rabbit hole

When you realize you’ve slipped, don’t punish yourself, just interrupt the spiral.

  1. Say it out loud: “Rabbit hole.”
  2. Bookmark all open tabs into a folder called “Parking Lot – Today’s Date.”
  3. Close the browser entirely.
  4. Take a 2-minute reset.
  5. Ask: What single step would move this forward right now?
  6. Start a fresh, short timer and resume the smallest actionable piece.

You may not be able to undo the detour, but you can reclaim the rest of your session.

VISIBLE SUPPORT | Make It Visible

The Decide & Do method works best when it’s in your line of sight.
You might keep it taped to the edge of your laptop, saved as a pinned note, or on a laminated card beside your desk.

When focus is fragile, visual cues keep you anchored.

Because most of us don’t get lost out of laziness, we get lost because our brains are full and our time is scarce.

FINAL THOUGHT | Momentum Beats Perfection

This method isn’t about becoming hyper-productive.
Instead, the goal is ending your work block with something finished and still having energy left for the people and parts of your life that matter.

A completed draft, a printed handout, an email sent…those are the moments that build the kind of sustainable momentum your business needs.

Protecting your focus protects your evenings, your rest, and your ability to keep doing this work long-term.
