Set Yourself Up for Success

Trying babywearing for the first time on hour three of baby screaming in the middle of the night? Let’s hit pause here - this isn’t the time to learn a new skill.
You wouldn’t hit the gym for the first time on an empty belly and no sleep, and although babywearing isn’t exactly a workout, it does require your brain to engage…which goes better when everyone’s needs are met.
No one learns well when they’re hungry, tired, or overwhelmed - including babies. Waiting for a time when you and your baby are content makes it much more likely that this will be a positive experience for both of you…which will set you up to reap more babywearing rewards as time goes on.
Before you dive in, do a quick check-in:
For your baby:
- Recently fed?
- Diaper changed?
- Calm-ish and alert?
For you:
- Have you eaten?
- Drank some water today?
- Feeling steady enough to try something new?
A little fussing is normal, especially at first (and we’re not just talking about the baby). But if either of you is on the edge, it’s totally okay to take a break and try again later.
Eventually, babywearing will be one of your go-to tools for calming your baby (or even calming yourself). But in the beginning, setting the stage really does make a difference.
Need a little help figuring out what’s baby fuss vs. carrier confusion? That’s where babywearing educators shine. They won’t just help you adjust your carrier; they’ll help you read your baby’s cues, tune into your own, and actually enjoy the process.
